Celebrating 30 Years of Linda Macdonald Jewellery

Thirty years ago, as a 21-year-old graduate with a handful of jewellery designs and a display cabinet in my parents’ guest house, I could never have imagined where this journey would lead.

From those first sales at my degree show to winning Jewellery Designer of the Year and sending jewellery to customers around the world, it has been an adventure filled with creativity, hard work and so many wonderful memories.

Thirty years of inspiration, craftsmanship and stories, all inspired by the beauty of Scotland.

30 Years… Where Has the Time Gone?

This year marks an incredible milestone for Linda Macdonald Jewellery – 30 years in business.

Looking back, it’s hard to believe how quickly the years have passed and how much has changed since graduating from Glasgow School of Art in 1995 with a degree in Silversmithing and Jewellery.

Interestingly, jewellery wasn’t always the plan. I began my studies hoping to become a children’s book illustrator, but during my first year I discovered jewellery making and completely fell in love with the idea of creating wearable pieces of art. That one decision changed the course of my life, and three decades later I’m still doing what I love every day.

Where It All Began

I sold my very first pieces of jewellery at my degree show, aged just 21.

Soon afterwards, I displayed my growing collection in a small cabinet in my parents’ guest house, where visitors could browse and buy my work. Looking back now, those humble beginnings feel a world away, but every business has to start somewhere.

My first collection was called “With Love…”, a name that still feels fitting today. Every piece has always been designed with the hope that it will become part of someone’s own story, whether celebrating love, friendship, family or treasured memories.

After graduating, I began developing a more commercial collection for galleries and independent shops. I was incredibly fortunate to begin working with John Lewis early in my career, which led to exhibiting at trade fairs throughout the UK.

Over the following years, the business grew beyond anything I could have imagined. At its peak, we were supplying more than 150 galleries and gift shops across the UK and overseas.

When I first started, business looked very different. Orders arrived by fax, customer addresses were handwritten and the internet was only just beginning to change the way people shopped.

Around 2006 we launched our website, refreshed our branding and introduced the logo and packaging that many of our customers still recognise today.

From those early days in my parents’ garage workshop to the workshop and showroom we now have at our home in Cardross, it has been a journey of continual learning, adapting and embracing change.

Inspired by Scotland Every Day

The Scottish landscape has always been at the heart of everything I design.

Whether I’m walking with the dog, spending time with our Highland pony or simply exploring the hills, lochs and coastline around us, nature constantly provides fresh inspiration.

The romance, history and folklore woven into Scotland’s landscapes naturally find their way into many of my jewellery collections.

It’s those moments outdoors that remind me why I started creating jewellery in the first place: to capture memories, places and emotions that people can carry with them every day.

A Career Highlight I’ll Never Forget

There have been many special moments over the past thirty years, but one stands out above all the rest.

Winning Jewellery Designer of the Year in 2012 was an incredible honour and remains one of the proudest moments of my career. To have my work recognised in that way after years of dedication and hard work was both humbling and inspiring.

Awards are wonderful milestones, but the greatest reward has always been knowing that our jewellery has become part of so many people’s lives, marking engagements, anniversaries, birthdays, weddings and moments of remembrance.

More Than Jewellery

One of the unexpected joys of recent years has been welcoming people into the studio for creative workshops and events.

Sharing creativity, meeting customers face to face and seeing friendships develop through these gatherings has added another wonderful chapter to the business.

It’s a lovely reminder that creativity has always been about bringing people together.

Thank You

Thirty years simply wouldn’t have been possible without the support of our wonderful customers, friends and family.

Whether you’ve been with us since the very beginning, discovered us at a craft fair, visited our Cardross showroom or found us online from the other side of the world, thank you.

Every order, every recommendation and every kind message has helped shape Linda Macdonald Jewellery into what it is today.

I still feel incredibly fortunate to spend my days designing jewellery inspired by the landscapes I love and sending a little piece of Scotland to homes around the world.

Here’s to the next chapter – and thank you for being part of the journey.
