Caring For Your Jewellery

Linda Macdonald jewellery is handmade using sterling silver, often with 9ct gold detail. With the right care and storage, it can be enjoyed for many years.

Storing your jewellery

Store jewellery in a dry place, away from direct sunlight, heat and humidity.

Keeping silver jewellery in a sealed bag or its original box can help reduce exposure to air and slow down tarnishing.

Store each piece separately where possible, so that jewellery does not rub against other items and become scratched.

Avoid storing jewellery on windowsills, beside radiators or heating vents, or in bathrooms, as heat and moisture can encourage tarnishing.

Wearing your jewellery

Perfume, hairspray, moisturiser and other cosmetics can react with silver. Apply these products before putting on your jewellery and allow them to dry first.

We recommend removing jewellery before:

  • exercising;
  • sleeping;
  • cleaning or gardening;
  • carrying out physical work;
  • showering or bathing; and
  • swimming in a pool, hot tub or the sea.

Chlorine, bleach, salt water, perspiration and strong sunlight can all affect silver and speed up tarnishing.

Cleaning your jewellery

We do not recommend using silver-dip solutions on Linda Macdonald jewellery, as these may affect the oxidised details used in many of our designs.

For gentle cleaning:

  1. Use a soft brush with a small amount of mild washing-up liquid and warm water.
  2. Rinse the jewellery carefully.
  3. Dry it thoroughly with a soft cloth.
  4. Finish with an anti-tarnish silver polishing cloth where appropriate.

Avoid rubbing oxidised areas too firmly, as this may gradually remove the darker finish.
