Hallmarking

Our Commitment to Hallmarking

Precious metals such as silver, gold, platinum and palladium are rarely used in their purest form when making jewellery. They are usually alloyed with other metals to achieve the desired strength, durability and colour.

Because it is not possible to determine the precious-metal content of an item simply by looking at or touching it, UK law requires qualifying items to be independently tested and hallmarked before they can be described as precious metal.

Hallmarking is mandatory for items above the following weights:

  • Silver: above 7.78g
  • Gold: above 1g
  • Palladium: above 1g
  • Platinum: above 0.5g

Linda Macdonald Jewellery is registered with the Edinburgh Assay Office, helping to ensure that our precious metal jewellery complies with UK hallmarking regulations. Before an item is dispatched, it is subject to our internal confirmation process to ensure that the appropriate hallmarking requirements have been met.

Jewellery below the mandatory hallmarking weight

Our smaller pieces are not hallmarked when they fall below the statutory weight exemptions.

For these pieces, Linda Macdonald Jewellery operates a separate due-diligence process, including periodic voluntary testing, to confirm that the metal meets the required minimum fineness.

Assay Assured

We are proud to be an Assay Assured Jewellery Retailer. Assay Assured status is awarded only to retailers that have been independently audited and verified. The scheme is run and overseen by the Edinburgh Assay Office and provides customers with added reassurance that precious metal jewellery is independently tested and hallmarked where legally required.

The short video below, from the Edinburgh Assay Office, explains the different marks found on precious metal jewellery and what they mean.
